September 2021 Staff Spotlight
Winnie Starr
Staff Accountant
Winnie started at Hawthorne & Co. CPAs as a Staff Accountant in November 2018 after working for a big corporation for many years. She joined our team because she felt she was ready for a change and that working for a smaller public accounting firm would give her the opportunity to work in many areas of accounting and taxes.
Winnie’s favorite part of working at Hawthorne & Co. CPAs is our firm’s environment. She feels like she fits in well and that everyone is nice to work with. She also enjoys learning new things every day and finds great satisfaction in helping clients directly and being able to meet their needs.
After working for many years as an accountant, Winnie’s advice for young professionals is to be open to learning about various engagements and to not be afraid of the challenging ones, as they will only help you to grow your career.
She also believes that young professionals in the accounting industry may find a lot of value working in a public accounting firm.
“The experience you gain from working in a public accounting firm is very valuable for an accountant, so get the most out of it while you are in it, whether you plan to stay in public accounting or go to private industries someday,” Winnie advises.

Winnie has over 60 houseplants, and counting!
“I felt that I missed out on this opportunity in my early career because I went straight to work for a big corporation. These days, hiring managers tend to favor applicants who have a background in public accounting. You are more likely to move up the corporate ladder faster, as well.”
In her free time, Winnie enjoys cooking, spending time with her family, fostering animals, gardening and taking care of her growing collection of houseplants – she currently has over 60 houseplants and counting! She is also passionate about volunteering and helping out in her community.

Something most people don’t know about Winnie is that she considers herself addicted to YouTube and loves to binge-watch a large variety of topics. She enjoys watching YouTube videos to discover new recipes, learn how to take care of house plants, explore trending home design and learn how to do various DIY projects, and to listen to new songs and learn dance moves.
