May 2021 Staff Spotlight: Theresa Christianson

May 2021 Staff Spotlight

Theresa Christianson, CPA

Manager Accountant

Theresa recently joined the Hawthorne & Co. CPAs team as a Manager Accountant in January 2021, but she is no stranger to accounting. She previously worked at Ernest Jonson & Company PS for 38 years before the firm combined with ours. Theresa had worked with many of the same clients for 30 years or more and says she just could not bring herself to walk away.

Coming to Hawthorne & Co. CPAs gave Theresa the opportunity she had hoped for to help ease the transition to a new firm for the clients and our staff. Now, as a part of the Hawthorne team, her favorite part of working with us is getting to know the rest of our staff.

Theresa J. Christianson, CPA

She says everyone is nice and friendly, and that even though she works remotely, she enjoys the fun interactions among our staff. She also enjoys assisting and teaching staff members who are newer to the accounting profession.

With nearly four decades of experience in the accounting industry, Theresa has learned many important lessons and developed great habits that she is happy to pass on to young professionals.

“For young accounting professionals, I would say be sure to stay current on all tax law changes as well as the accounting standards. It’s amazing how rapidly things change. Be patient. Accounting is complicated. It takes time.

For any young person entering the workforce, I would say develop good work ethics, right from the get-go. Those will take you a long way whether you stay in public accounting or move to private industries. And finally, always remember loyalty and respect amongst co-workers and between employee and employer go both ways.”

Outside of work, Theresa’s favorite thing to do is spend time with her family. She has two children and three grandchildren ranging in age from 12 to 21 years old. When she isn’t with her family, she likes to read and mostly enjoys romance novels.

Something most people don’t know about Theresa is that she is very afraid of heights – to the point of hardly being able to breathe going over a high bridge, such as the Astoria bridge. Even though she has a terrible fear of heights, she loves flying and even enjoys sitting in the window seat.
